Protect Passenger Transportation in B.C.

Safe. Professional. Accessible. Fair. Sustainable.

When you get into a taxi or ride-hailing vehicle, you deserve safe, professional and reliable service from a properly trained driver in a well-maintained vehicle.

The people providing these services also deserve safety and security. Taxi and ride-hailing drivers regularly work alone and late at night transporting people they have never met before. They deserve appropriate safety protections and a fair opportunity to earn a sustainable living with dignity.

Passenger transportation matters to all of us. Seniors rely on it for medical appointments. People with disabilities depend on accessible vehicles. Workers, families and visitors rely on taxis and ride-hailing every day to get where they need to go.

B.C.'s passenger transportation system has changed dramatically since ride-hailing was introduced to allow US-based companies to operate. Competition and technology can provide choice and convenience, but they should not come at the expense of public safety, service standards, accessibility, local business, or the dignity of people whose livelihoods depend on this industry.

These issues affect passengers, taxi drivers, ride-hailing drivers and communities across British
Columbia. This petition brings together areas of common concern where we believe meaningful action can improve the system for everyone

The issue is not taxis versus ride-hailing. It is about building a system that works for passengers and drivers.

What are we asking for?

  • Address vehicle oversupply so the number of vehicles competing for trips reasonably reflects passenger demand.
  • Establish sustainable and fair pricing rules that protect passengers while accounting for the real cost of providing passenger transportation.
  • Restore professional driver training and service and safety standards for taxi and ride-hailing drivers.
  • Strengthen passenger and driver safety, including by restoring and modernizing safety-camera standards.
  • Change Hours of Service rules to reflect the realities of passenger transportation, including waiting time and split shifts.
  • Protect wheelchair-accessible and local transportation services that seniors and people with disabilities depend on.
  • Support ride-hailing drivers by requiring greater transparency and accountability from ride-hailing platforms, including on matters affecting their work and earnings.
  • Prepare responsibly for autonomous vehicles before another major disruption to passenger transportation.
  • Provide a written action plan with clear timelines for all of the above.

Innovation should raise standards - not lower them.

British Columbians deserve safe, professional, accessible and reliable transportation. The people providing that service deserve safety, dignity and a fair opportunity to earn a sustainable living.
